새해 복 많이 받으세요

 2010년 마지막 포스팅입니다.

올 한해도 이제 6시간밖에 남지 않았네요. 개인적으로는 정말로 다사다난했던 한해였습니다.
내년에는 풍파가 조금이라도 덜 한 한해가 되었으면 하는데 말이죠....

리뷰 결산에 이어 이글루스 공식 2010 결산도 포스팅합니다.

포스트 수는 많지만 댓글은 별로 없는 전형적인 마이너 블로거의 모습을 보여주고 있는데 그래도 海月님, rumic71님, 잠본이님이 많은 댓글을 달아주셨네요. 정말 감사드립니다.

그나저나&nbsp;추리소설을 중심으로 한 장르문학 전문 리뷰 블로그라 생각하고 있는데 가장 많이 읽힌 글이 무한도전 관련 글이라는 것은 좀 아이러니컬하네요... 2011년 부터는 제 블로그 속성에 충실한 글만 올릴 생각입니다.

어쨌건 한해동안 찾아주신 많은 분들께 감사드리며, 행복한 연말연시 맞으시기 바랍니다. 내년에도 많이 찾아주세요. 제발~

 2009 내 블로그 리뷰 총결산

일곱번째 결산 보고입니다. 12월은 아직 남아있지만 남은 기간 동안 책을 더 읽을 일은 없을 것 같아 포스팅올립니다.

올해는 만화와 잡지류 제외하고 총 166권을 읽었습니다.
분포로 따지자면 1월달 13권 / 2월달 8권 / 3월달 12권 / 4월달 18권 / 5월달 25권 / 6월달 15권 / 7월달 14권 / 8월달 18권 / 9월달 14권 / 10월달 11권 / 11월 12권 / 12월 6권 입니다. 장르별로는 추리 / 호러 관련 독서가 95권. 장르문학 전부 합치면 107권이고요.

전체적으로 굉장히 책을 많이 읽은 한해였어요. 산본으로 이사온 뒤 근처 도서관을 애용한 덕분이죠. 이사오길 정말 잘한것 같습니다. 이 정도면 정말 남들에게 취미가 독서라고 이야기해도 부끄럽지 않은 숫자를 읽은 것 같아 왠지 뿌듯하네요.

그럼 결산 들어갑니다~ 언제나처럼 제 블로그에 올린 리뷰들 중에서만 선정했습니다.

2010년 베스트 추리소설 :
<유다의 창>
단평 : 고전으로서의 묵직함, 트릭이 빛나는 본격 추리소설의 참맛, 그리고 기타 다양한 재미까지 선사해주는 걸작.

올해는 많이 읽은만큼 별점 4점짜리 후보작이 굉장히 많았습니다. 후보작은 아래의 8편이었습니다.

이 중 <아 아이이치로의 낭패>는 오랫동안 기다려왔던 팬심이 반영되었기에 아깝게 탈락, 그리고 <7퍼센트 용액>은 셜록키언으로서의 애정이 포함되어 있어서 역시 아깝게 탈락. 그리고 <셜록 홈스의 과학>과 <누가 로저 애크로이드를 죽였는가?>는 추리소설로 보기는 조금 어려운 책이라 제외해서 남은 3편 중 가장 인상적이었던 <유다의 창>을 꼽습니다.

별점 1.5점의 <금요일밤의 미스터리 클럽>
단평 : 차라리 요리책이었더라면 더 좋지 않았을까...


2010년 베스트 장르 문학 :
<아시모프의 과학소설 창작백과>
단평 : 방대한 분량, 자료적 가치와 함께 작가에게 피가 되고 살이 되는 정보도 가득!

<샤르부크 부인의 초상>
단평 : 고급스러운 환상문학이란 바로 이런 것이다라고 보여주는 듯한 작품.

덧붙여 2010년 베스트 장르문학 단편으로 <계약은 충실하게>를 꼽겠습니다. 이유는 여기서확인하시길^^

2010년 워스트 장르 문학 :
별점 1점짜리 두편 선정합니다.
<하노이의 탑>
단평 : 소설적인 가치가 전무한, 수학자가 쓴 수학자가 세상을 구한다는 자뻑 판타지.

<인간 동물원>
단평 : 읽으면서 내내 불쾌하기만 했던 쓰레기.

<명품의 탄생>
단평 : 자료적 가치와 더불어 내용까지 흥미진진한 올해의 베스트!

이중 <조선잡기>는 디테일은 좋았지만 관심이 덜한 특정시기에 집중되어 있다는 이유 때문에, <한국 수학사>는 이론적으로 어려운 내용이 다수 포함되어 있기에, <경성 리포트>는 다른 경성관련 서적과 내용적으로 유사점이 많이 있어서 아쉽게 탈락했습니다.

2010 워스트 역사 관련 도서 :
별점 1.5점의 <미스터리 박물관>
단평 : 아직도 이런 책이 나오나? 케케묵은 이야기를 약간 포장하기만 했을 뿐...


2010년 베스트 / 워스트 전공관련 / 스터디 도서 :
전부 다 별점 2.5~3점 수준이라 고만고만하네요. 그래서 별도의 베스트 / 워스트는 꼽지 않겠습니다.

올해 신설된 카테고리. 별점 4점짜리 두권 선정합니다.

단평 : 뻔한 레시피 중심이나 맛집 순방에 불과한 요리 - 미식 관련 에세이와는 개념 자체가 다른 색다름이 좋았다.

<맛의 유혹>
단평 : 방대한 요리의 역사와 레시피의 자료적 가치만 따져도 별점 4점은 충분!

2010년 워스트 Food / 구루메 도서 :
별점 1.5점의 <영화처럼 사랑을 요리하다>
단평 : 흔하디 흔한 영화 줄거리 요약에 영화와 별 상관없는 요리 레시피가 부록처럼 실려있는 억지스러운 컨셉 도서.

<책 사냥꾼>
단평 : 책 수집가의 전문가적인 수다의 향연

별점 4점짜리 후보작이 3편 있습니다. 후보작은 다음과 같습니다.

이 중 <위험한 호기심>은 다른 심리학 서적과 동일한 내용이 많다는 것 때문에, <셈도사 베레미즈의 모험>은 독자층이 조금은 저연령대를 목표로 한 책이기에 탈락했습니다.

2010년 워스트 기타 도서 :
별점 1.5점의 <사기공화국에서 살아남기>
단평 : 제목에서 기대한 것과 다른 훈계조의 내용만 가득했음.


2010 베스트 / 워스트 추리 / 호러 영화 :
별점이 다 2~3점이라 딱히 한편을 꼽기 어렵네요. 별도의 베스트 / 워스트는 없습니다.

단평 : 폐쇄형 작품의 재미가 어디서 비롯되는지는 전혀 생각하지 않은 수준낮은 졸작.


결산평 :
일단 추리 소설 쪽에서는 많은 고전과 명작들이 많이 소개되어 참으로 풍부한 한해가 아니었나 싶네요. 하지만 널리 알려진 고전임에도 불구하고 의외로 작품 자체는 그닥인 작품들이 많다는 것이 좀 의외였달까요? 그래도 추리소설 독자로는 무척이나 즐거운 한해였던 것은 분명합니다. 기타 다른 도서들은 많이 읽지는 않았지만 역시나 새롭게 접한 작가들의 좋은 책이 많았던 것 같네요.

내년에도 많은 책들과 함께 하는 한해가 되었으면 합니다.

 2010 올해의 추리소설 이벤트

국내 최고의 미스터리 팬덤의 하나인 하우미스터리에서 진행하는 이벤트입니다. 2009년 12월 ~ 2010년에 간행된 책들이 대상인데 확인해보니 이 중에서 읽은 책은 30여권밖에 안되네요. 너무 적게 읽었나? 어쨌건 제 블로그 정리 차원에서라도 저도 한번 선정해 보도록 하겠습니다. 2010년은 아직 며칠 더 남았지만 책을 더 읽기는 힘들 것 같거든요.

그럼 먼저 선정에 앞서 간단하게 2010년 추리소설계를 들여다 보도록 하죠.

2010년 국내 추리소설계는 세가지 키워드로 설명할 수 있겠네요. "쏠림 현상이 심했고" "뜻깊은 발굴도 있었으며" "국산 추리소설이 모처럼 활기를 띈" 한해였다고 말이죠.

첫번째 "쏠림 현상"은 230여권의 작품 중 100권 정도를 일본 작품이 차지하고 있다는 것으로 일본 추리소설 비중이 너무 높다는 것, 그리고 100권 정도의 일본 작품도 히가시노 게이고, 우타노 쇼고, 미야베 미유키 등 특정 유명 작가에게 많이 치우쳐져 있다는 것, 마지막으로 일본 작품 이외의 작품 역시 기존 유명 작가의 시리즈 작품들과 국내에서 인기가 많은 팩션 장르물이 대부분이라는 것에 기인합니다.
출판사도 책이 팔려야 먹고 사는 경제조직이니 인기 작가 작품이 많은 것은 이해할 수 있고 덕분에 출간된 반가운 작품들도 많았지만 일부 작가는 작품의 수준보다는 순전히 작가의 네임벨류로 작품이 선정되어 출간되는 것 같아 조금 아쉽더군요.

두번째 "뜻깊은 발굴"은 첫번째 쏠림 현상의 와중에도 추리 애호가로서 기다려 왔던 반가운 작품들이 속속 번역된 한해이기도 해서 꼽아보았습니다. 일본 추리소설 중에서는 <아 아이이치로의 낭패> 라던가 <리라장 살인사건>이, 영-미권에서는 <7퍼센트 용액>과 <붉은 오른손>, <위풍당당 명탐정 외젠 발몽>과 딕슨 카의 고전들이 꾸준히 출간된 것을 들 수 있겠네요.
앞으로는 일본과 영-미권에 치우치지 않은, 예를 들면 중국이나 대만 등 제 3세계권의 추리소설도 발간되었으면 합니다. 혹시 모르죠. <장미의 이름> 처럼 대박이 날 수도 있잖아요?

마지막 "국산 추리소설의 활기"는 목록에서 보기드문 한국 추리소설이 많이 보였기 때문인데 개인적으로는 아주 반가운 일이었어요. 장르도 훨씬 다양해져서 꾸준히 출간되어왔던 단편집뿐만 아니라 정통 장편 추리물에서부터 팩션, 하드보일드, 그리고 김내성의 과거 고전이 재발간되는 되는 등 질과 양 모두에서 상당히 고무적인 모습을 보인 것은 아주 기쁩니다. 한국 추리소설도 더욱 성장한 한해라 생각되며, 부끄럽게도 제대로 읽어본 작품이 아직 없는데 꼭 찾아 읽어봐야겠다는 다짐을 하게 되네요.
그나저나 여기 <경성탐정록> 2권이 포함되어 있었어야 하는데... 눈에서 땀이나네... ㅠ.ㅠ

그럼 간단한 분석을 마치고, 제 개인적인 <2010 올해의 추리소설> 순위를 발표하도록 하겠습니다. 두둥~


<Hansang의 2010 올해의 추리소설 Best 3>
* 2009년 12월 ~ 2010년 출간된 추리소설만 해당됨
<7퍼센트 용액> - 니콜러스 메이어 : 별점 4점 - 셜록키언들에게는 전설과도 같은 작품. 일본 원판으로 구입은 해 놓았지만 10페이지 정도 읽고 손 놓고 있던 차에 국내에 출간되어 너무나도 기뻤습니다. 작품도 역시나 만족스러웠고요.

<얼굴에 흩날리는 비> - 기리노 나쓰오 : 별점 4점 - 과거 구판본으로 읽었을 때도 좋았지만 정식 완역본으로 작품의 참맛을 느끼게 해 준 작품입니다. 제 생각에는 여성작가의 하드보일드란 이런 것이다! 라는 가이드 역할을 하는 작품같아요. 첫 맛부터 진하고 독한 위스키라기 보다는 부드럽지만 슬프면서도 날카롭고 쓴 뒷맛을 감추고 있는 사케같은 작품이랄까요?

<유다의 창> - 존 딕슨 카 : 별점 4점 - 고전 걸작. 더 말이 필요없죠. 제가 읽은 딕슨 카 전 작품 중에서도 첫손에 꼽을만한 작품입니다.


<아차상>
<마크스의 산 1.2> - 다카무라 가오루 : 별점 4점 - 2010년 재판본이 아닌 예전 고려원 판본 별점입니다. 새 판본을 읽지 못했기에 선정하지는 않습니다만, 좋은 작품이죠.

<아 아이이치로의 낭패> - 아와사카 쓰마오 : 별점 4점 - 별점 4점이기는 한데 개인적인 팬심이 포함되어 있어서 순위에서는 뺍니다.

확실히 요새 책 읽는 사람이 적긴 적나보네요.

밀린 만화를 몰아보다

 최근 개인 사정으로 만화만 보게 되네요. 오래되었지만 완결이 되지 않아서 놓아두고 있던 작품 몇개를 완독했습니다.

<환영박람회>라는 작품을 좋아하기는 하나 다른 작품들은 그다지 눈여겨 보지 않았던 토우메 케이의 보기드문 완결작. 혈족간에 유전되는 특이질환을 주제로 근친상간, 친족살해 등과 같은 금기를 비극적 로맨스를 섞어내어 표현한 작품입니다. 굉장한 존재감을 보여주는 히로인 치즈나의 매력과 더불어 작가 특유의 거친 뎃셍이 시너지를 잘 일으켰다 생각되네요.

그러나 또다른 주인공인 카즈나, 그리고 그의 상대역인 야에가시의 고민과 갈등은 그닥 효과적으로 표현되지 못했으며, 무엇보다도 파국으로 치닫게 되는 반전과 극적 결말에서 "봉인된 기억" 이라는 만병통치약을 너무 많이 쓴 것은 좀 아쉬웠습니다.

조금 더 짧게 압축했더라면, 그리고 보다 더 비극적이었더라면 좋지 않았을까 생각되네요. 별점은 2.5점입니다.

엠마 Emma 10 - 카오루 모리 지음/북박스(랜덤하우스중앙)

모리 카오루의 달리 말이 필요없는 유명한 작품이죠. 중간까지 읽다가 손을 놨었는데 이번에 완독하게 되었습니다.
빅토리아 시대의 영국을 손에 잡힐 것 처럼 그려낸 디테일한 그림과 굉장히 감성적이고 미려한 감정묘사들, 그리고 진지함 속에서도 적절한 유머가 가미되어 재미있게 읽을 수 있는 작품임에는 분명합니다. 또한 놀라울 정도로 등장인물 거의 모두가 행복해지는 해피엔딩 역시 이 작품의 강점이며 안경끼고 참하기 그지없는, 그야말로 학교 여선생님같은 캐릭터를 메인 히로인으로 전격적으로 배치한 과감성이 이 작품을 더욱 특이하게 만든 것이 아닐까 싶네요.

그러나 기본적인 주제가 결국은 "신분을 초월한 사랑" 이라는 것은 좀 진부했고 그 사랑이 시작된 계기가 "엠마"라는 히로인의 미모에 기인한다는 점은 좀 아쉬웠습니다. 제가 이런 이야기를 쉽게 받아들이기에는 나이를 좀 많이 먹은 것 같군요... 별점은 3점입니다.

홈센터 텐코 (ホームセンターてんこ) 1~5 - 토다 가츠유키 : 별점 2.5점

 

언니와 함께 도쿄로 이사온 고등학교 1학년 이모토 노리코의 별명은 "텐코". 그녀는 이사 첫날 우연하게 인연을 맺은 "홈센터 Tenco"와 직원 코우사쿠의 도움으로 DIY의 매력에 빠지게 된다.

여고생이 주인공인 본격 DIY만화. 짤막한 에피소드로 이루어진 옴니버스물로 각 에피소드마다 여러가지 물건들을 DIY로 만들어나가는 과정과 관련된 도구를 소개하는 식으로 만화가 전개됩니다.

그런데 좋았던 초-중반에 비해서 뒤로가면 갈수록 DIY와는 좀 동떨어지는 이야기로 흘러간다는 것은 좀 아쉽더군요. "용접"이라던가 "도예", "화덕만들기", 그리고 "수제 카드 만들기" 같은 에피소드들은 뭔가를 직접 만드는 것에 대한 즐거움을 알려주기 위한 목적은 알겠지만 작품이 재미를 전해주었던 기본 설정 - 새로운 무언가를 새로운 도구를 써서 만들고 중간에 생긴 어려움을 텐코의 아이디어로 해결한다 - 을 잘 살리지 못해서 재미가 떨어진다 생각되었거든요. 벌려놓은 설정을 제대로 보여주지도 못하고 5권으로 후다닥 끝내 버렸다는 점에서 저만 그렇게 생각한게 아닌듯 싶기도 합니다.
또 중간중간 만화에 등장한 직접 제작한 물건들의 사진이 실려있는데 딱히 잘 만든 것처럼 보이지 않는 것도 감점요소였어요. DIY라는 취지는 좋지만 돈과 시간을 들여 만들어낸 결과물이 별로라면 공감하기가 좀 어렵잖아요?

그래서 별점은 2.5점입니다. 3권까지는 3점 이상은 줄 수 있는데 4, 5권에서 감점이 좀 많이 되었네요. 그래도 전반부의 재미는 확실하고 "만드는 즐거움"을 알려주는 기본 목적에는 아주 충실하기에 DIY에 관심있으시다면 한번 읽어보셔도 좋을 것 같습니다.

쓰쿠지 어시장 3대손 - 마츠하라 신고

상사맨 아카기 슌이치는 과장 진급과 동시에 회사 구조조정을 떠맡게 된 후 존경하던 선배의 구조조정을 직접 진행한다. 이 일로 회사생활에 환멸을 느낀 그는 우연찮게 애인을 돕기 위해 뛰어들었던 츠키지 어시장에서 일을 할 결심을 굳히는데...

인기만화 <어시장 3대째>를 영화화한 작품. 그러나 만화 원작에는 등장하지 않는 1권 시작 직전부분, 즉 츠키지 어시장의 도매상인 우오마츠에 3대째로 사위가 새롭게 들어오게 되는 부분의 이야기를 주로 다루고 있습니다.

그런데 기대와는 다르게 아쉬운 부분이 많았어요. 츠키지에서 아르바이트를 시작한 슌이치가 다양한 생선의 시식을 통해 점차 능력을 높여가는 부분에서처럼 생선을 이용한 요리와 생선을 다루는 스킬, 그리고 츠키지 어시장 이야기 자체에 집중하는 것이 더욱 좋았을텐데 중반부터 벌어지는 자질구레한 에피소드들때문에 영화가 늘어지는 느낌이 강했기 때문입니다. 충분히 강약을 조절해가며 괜찮은 영화를 만들 수 있었을텐데 말이죠.
로맨틱 코미디로 변질되어가는 중간과정도 별로였지만 무엇보다도 원작에는 존재하지도 않는 에이지 - 아스카에 대한 설정은 빼는 것이 훨~씬 좋았을 것 같습니다. 정말이지 한국 막장드라마 수준밖에 안되는 불필요한 설정이었어요.

물론 에이지와 아스카의 관계를 오해한 어시장 사람들을 그린 에피소드 등 몇개는 괜찮았고 특히 치아키 - 에이지 커플의 이야기는 원작에서의 재미만큼 영화에서도 잘 표현하기는 했습니다. "내가 여자 옷 따위를 고를 수 있을줄 알아!" 라는 명대사가 작렬하는 부분이 인상적이었죠.
그러나 클라이막스에 이르기까지는 솔직히 지루했고 전체적으로 산만하고 포인트를 못 잡은듯한 느낌이 강해서 별점은 2점입니다. 원작의 재미요소 - 초보자의 어시장에서의 성장기 + 다양한 해산물에 대한 정보 제공 - 를 모르고 만든 작품같더군요. 구태여 찾아보실 필요는 없을 것 같습니다.

지키루와 하이드와 재판원 (ジキルとハイドと裁判員 1~4) (미완) - 森田崇 / 北原雅紀 : 별점 2.5점

재판관 헨미 지키루에게 갑작스럽게 찾아온 자칭 "하이드"라는 존재. 그는 시공을 멈춘뒤 사람들의 "톤톤"을 불러내어 그 사람의 기억과 행동을 재생하는 능력을 지니고 있었다...

앞서 보았던 <재판원의 여신> 처럼 일본의 재판원 제도에 대해 다루고 있는 법정 만화입니다. 요새 몸이 좀 안좋고 해서 주로 만화만 보게 되네요....
법정관련 컨텐츠는 흔하게 널렸지만 이 작품은 줄거리 소개대로 판타지 설정을 도입하고 있다는 것이 큰 차이점입니다. "하이드" 때문에 주인공인 헨미 지키루가 피고인이 유죄인지 무죄인지를 미리 알 수 있다는 설정은 상당히 독특했어요. 덕분에 표면적으로 드러난 증거를 하나씩 피고에게 유리하게, 또는 불리하게 조작하는 지키루의 활약이 재미의 핵심 포인트로 예를 들자면, 첫번째 사건에서 무죄인 피고인이 현장에서 도망치는 것을 피해자 동생에게 목격당했다는 결정적 증언을 "증언심리학"으로 결국 뒤집는다던가, 두번째 사건에서 유죄인 피고인의 거짓말을 밝혀내기 위하여 재판에 사용할 수 없는 자료 이외의 잡지 기사를 인용해가며 재판원들에게 부정적인 인상을 심어주는 것을 들 수 있겠죠. 세번째 사건에서 피고에게 살인미수 혐의를 뒤집어 씌우는 것도 좋았고요.
아울러 이렇게 미리 피고의 유죄 - 무죄를 알 수 있다는 점에서 "도서추리소설" 같은 재미도 어느정도 느껴져서 좋았습니다.

그리고 주인공 지키루가 존경하는 선배 재판관 야쿠시지의 말 - 보이지 않는 진실을 보인다고 생각하는 순간 진실을 놓치게 된다 - 대로라면 결국 하이드라는 존재와 지키루가 본 톤톤에 의한 피고인의 진실이 왜곡된 거짓일 수도 있기에 비교적 판타지와 법정물의 줄타기에서도 성공하고 있는 듯 싶습니다. 결국 지키루의 판단은 "자기가 본 것"에 기반하고 있으니까요. 뭐 이 부분은 두고봐야겠죠.

그러나 재판원들을 조종해 나가는 과정이 지루하고 길게 느껴지는 것은 감점 요소였으며 재판원들의 심리를 너무 단순하게 그린 것도 별로 마음에 들지는 않았어요. 재판원 제도에 대한 고민은 없이 오락적으로 접근한 측면이 강해서 그렇겠지만 분량에 비하면 너무 깊이가 없었달까요? 또 3권 이후 지키루의 연인 아버지가 뒤집어쓴 누명과 관련된 사건은 정말로 지나치다 싶을만큼 지루하기도 했어요.

이런 부분과 더불어 재판관이 재판원들을 원하는 방향으로 유도하는 것이 가능하다는 것, 그리고 재판장 가네마루의 재판원 제도를 비판하는 발언, 재판관의 "책임"을 강조하는 듯한 묘사들은 재판원 제도에 대해 비판적 입장을 취하고 있는 듯 싶은데 이 부분 역시 향후 추이는 좀 지켜봐야 알 수 있을 것 같습니다.

어쨌건 4권까지 읽었는데 현재까지의 별점은 2.5점. 오락적으로 승부하기에는 좀 지루하고 애매한 부분이 많았고 "재판원 제도"와 실제 재판에 대해 심층적으로 다루었다고 보기에는 단순했기 때문이죠. 그래서 추천하기는 좀 애매하고 아주 별로라고 보기도 어렵고 그러네요. 국내에 번역 출간되었는지는 모르겠는데 혹 관심 있으시다면 1권 정도는 읽어보시고 판단하시는게 옳을 것 같습니다.

고 물만두님에 대한 기사가 여러 매체에 실렸네요.
지병이 있으신건 알았지만 이렇게 어려운 상황에서 리뷰를 써 오신줄은 정말 몰랐습니다.
바빠서 시간없다는 핑계 대신 보다 노력해야 겠다는 생각이 들게 만드네요.

제 삶에 하나의 목표 - 추리소설 1000권 리뷰 - 를 가지게 해 주셨던 것,
그리고 추리문학을 위해 해 주신 많은 일들에 대해 진심어린 존경과 함께,
다시한번 고인의 명복을 빕니다.

간단한 근황이랄까요.

 

이번달로 지난 4년간 근무하던 회사를 그만두고 내년부터는 새로운 회사로 이직하게 되었습니다.
요새같은 찬바람부는 구직시장에서 취업하게 된 것 자체만으로도 운이 좋다고 생각해야겠죠.

어쨌건 막상 짐 정리를 하고 있자니 여러 생각이 스쳐지나갑니다.
여러 제품을 런칭시키고 실무를 진행하면서 정말로 많은 일을 해 왔던 4년간.
10년이 넘는 직장생활동안 두번째로 오래 다닌 회사로 그동안 정도 많이 들었던 터라 무척 아쉬움이 많이 남네요.

회사생활을 하며 그동안 만났던 많은 분들과의 인연이 가장 소중한 것일텐데 앞으로 어떤 일을 하던 좋은 인연으로 계속 이어지기만을 바라고 있습니다.

그런데 앞으로 새 회사에서 근무하려면 독서와 리뷰같은 취미생활을 하기는 조금 어려워 질 것 같군요.
블로그 개설 7년차에 겨우 470여권 남짓인데 이래서야 언제 추리소설 1,000권 리뷰라는 목표를 달성할 수 있을련지...

재판원의 여신 (裁判員の女神 ) 1~5 - 毛利 甚八 외: 별점 2점

모리 진파치가 글을 쓰고 <대사각하의 요리사>로 이름을 알린 가와스미 히로시가 그림을 맡아 발표한 만화입니다. 간만에 읽어본 일본 원서로 "재판원 제도"라는 일본의 재판제도, 즉 일종의 배심원 재판을 주요 소재로 다루고 있습니다.

그런데 솔직히 작품 자체는 실망스러웠습니다. 이유는 3가지로 요약할 수 있는데 제일 먼저 작품 특성상 "재판원 제도"에 대해서 설명하는 학습만화의 성격이 강해서 지루한 부분이 많다는 것을 꼽고 싶네요. 특히 1권의 경우는 대부분의 분량이 재판원의 선발과정과 재판 과정의 설명이 반 이상을 차지할 정도고 3권도 "사법의 독립"이라는 주제를 거의 절반에 걸쳐 설명하는 등 법정 장면과는 실질적으로 무관한, 지루한 전개가 많았습니다.

두번째로 재판 과정에서 검사와 변호사의 불꽃튀는 두뇌게임은 전무하고 재판원 (배심원) 들이 피고인의 유-무죄 및 형량을 결정하는 과정에서의 심리적 딜레마가 중심인 것도 문제라 생각됩니다. 이렇듯 일반인이 전혀 모르는 사람의 인생을 좌우하는 참여재판에서의 심리적 딜레마를 다루는 작품은 그간 꽤 있어왔고 재미가 없는 소재가 아닙니다. 그런데 이 작품은 반복묘사가 많은 등 전개에 문제가 많은 편이라 좀 지루하더군요. "죄는 미워하되 사람은 미워하지 마라" 라는 식의 논조도 공감하기 어려웠고요.

마지막으로 독특한 법정 추리물, 또는 재판물을 기대했는데 작품이 전혀 그렇지 않은 이유도 실망스러운 점이었습니다. 1권부터 4권까지 등장하는 3건의 사건 중 2건, 1권의 '강도 살인사건'과 2권의 '강간 살인사건'은 피고가 범행을 일부, 또는 전부 인정한 상황이기에 실질적으로 "양형", 즉 형을 부과하는 부분에서의 재판원들의 딜레마 이외의 극적 긴장 요소가 전무합니다. 그나마 3권 중반부터 4권에 이르는 사건은 피고가 무죄이고 결정적 단서가 재판 과정에서 밝혀진다는 점에서, 그리고 마지막 "도보로 30분 거리"라는 기소내용에 주목하는 장면은 썩 괜찮았습니다만 역시나 '심리묘사'가 중심이라 기대에 미치지는 못했어요. 경찰의 강압적인 수사에 의한 자백 이외의 증거가 없다는 것도 좀 말이 안되는 것 같았고요.
그래도 법의 맹점을 이용한다는 점에서 5권의 사형판결, 즉 "집행은 최소 10년 정도가 걸릴 것이며 그 안에 사형제도가 폐지될 것이다" 라는 아이디어 하나만큼은 괜찮더군요. 문제는 5권의 에피소드 역시 피고가 사형선고를 받아 마땅한 죄를 저질렀고 사형선고를 내리는데 재판원들이 갈등하는 이야기라는 점이겠죠. 심리적 딜레마 설명도 정도껏 해야지....

그 외에도 제목이 <재판원의 여신>인 만큼 주인공인 유우키 미치코 판사가 뭔가 역할을 해 줄것 같은데 전체적으로 재판원들이 주인공이라서 작품이 중심을 못 잡는것 같다는 생각이 드는 것도 단점이라 생각됩니다. 유우키 미치코는 자신의 논조를 설파하는 앵무새 역할 밖에는 없거든요. 이래서야 구태여 왜 집어넣었는지 모르겠어요. 솔직히 여신 없이 재판원들만 나와도 이야기가 성립되는데 말이죠.

물론 심리 묘사 그 자체만 즐긴다면 어느정도 기본 재미는 보장하는 소재이고 디테일한 재판과정의 묘사도 볼거리이긴 해서 아주 건질게 없는 작품은 아닙니다. 작화도 전혀 동적이지가 못하기에 썩 좋다고 할 수는 없지만 굉장히 읽기 쉽게 그려졌다는 점 하나는 높이 평가할 만 하고요. 제 일본어 실력이 부족하고 어려운 재판과정 묘사가 대부분임에도 비교적 쉽게 읽을 수 있었거든요.

그러나 제 기대와 많이 달랐다는 점, 그리고 기본 논조가 마음에 들지 않는다는 점에서 높은 점수를 주기는 힘드네요. 별점은 2점입니다. 일본 재판원 제도에 대해 관심이 많으신 분이 아니라면 구태여 찾아 읽으실 필요는 없습니다.

빌라 매그놀리아의 살인 - 와카타케 나나미 / 서혜영 : 별점 3점

 

빌라 매그놀리아의 살인 - 와카타케 나나미 지음, 서혜영 옮김/작가정신

하자키 시에 위치한 주택지 '빌라 하자키 매그놀리아'의 비어있는 3호실에서 한 남자의 시체가 발견된다. 시체는 얼굴과 손이 뭉개져 신원을 파악할 수 없는 상태. 이 사건으로 빌라 주민들의 다양한 생각이 오가던 와중 '중요한 단서'를 잡았다고 떠벌이고 다닌 5호의 아케미가 다음날 살해된 시체로 발견된다...

와카타케 나나미의 "하자키 시(市) 시리즈" 1탄입니다. 바다 옆 작은 소도시 하자키 시를 무대로 한, 이른바 "코지 미스터리"를 표방한 작품으로 2탄인 <헌책방 어제일리어의 사체>를 먼저 읽었더랬죠. 코지 미스터리라고 하기에는 너무 강력사건이 등장하기는 하지만....

어쨌건 이 작품도 역시나 <헌책방...>과 마찬가지로 수다스럽고 왁자지껄한, 유머러스한 추리물로 읽는 자체만으로도 굉장히 재미있었습니다. 탐정역인 형사반장 고마지와 부하 형사 히토쓰바시의 대화가 특히 압권이죠.
또 사소한 대화와 에피소드들 모두가 결국 하나의 결론을 이끌어내도록 유기적으로 연결되어 있는 식으로 복잡한 인간관계 속에서 교묘하게 사건의 내용과 단서를 엮어놓는 솜씨도 여전하더군요. 산길에서 발견된 "팬티"같은 경우가 대표적입니다. 그냥 날려간 빨래인줄 알았는데 나름 사건과 연관이 있다는 식이거든요. 그리고 이노 게이코의 협박사건 등 두개의 사건을 하나로 묶어서 전개하다가 결국 결말에서 두건의 사건이 전혀 별개의 것으로 만드는 아이디어도 좋았고요.

한마디로 말하자면 이 작가의 장점이 잘 부각된 작품이에요. 유머러스한 분위기, 교묘하게 배치된 복선과 단서에 따라 결말에 이르는 복잡하면서도 명쾌한 구성이라는 장점말이죠. 덧붙이자면 "누구나 죽이고 싶어하는 여자" 캐릭터를 만드는 솜씨는 확실히 와카타케 나나미를 따라올 작가가 없지 않을까 생각될 정도로 묘사가 대단했습니다!

그러나 조금 아쉬운 점이 있다면 추리적인 부분에서 살짝 기대에 미치지 못한 부분이 있다는 것이었어요. 두건의 살인이 벌어지는데 빌라에서 의문에 시체가 발견되는 사건은 너무 뜬금없는 사건에다가 어떻게보면 '사고' 에 가까운 사건이었다는 점에서, 그리고 두번째 사건인 아케미 살인사건은 범인의 알리바이에 있어서 우연과 운이 크게 작용했다는 점에서 높은 점수를 주기는 힘들었기 때문입니다. 두번째 사건에서 마쓰무라 켄에게 어머니가 전화를 걸지 않았더라면? 사건이 보다 빨리 해결될 수 있었을테니까요.
아울러 첫번째 사건은 경찰이 가지고 있는 정보 없이는 해결하기가 불가능했고 아케미 살인사건 역시 가장 중요한 정보가 마지막에서야 제공된다는 점에서 독자에게 썩 공정한 작품은 아니라는 생각이 들더군요. 마지막의 두개의 반전도 지나친 사족으로 여겨졌고요.

그래도 앞서 말한 장점과 더불어 책의 만든 모양새와 번역도 훌륭하고 시리즈답게 이어지는 캐릭터들, 그리고 헌책방 '기토당' 아르바이트 직원으로 '하무라' 라는 직원이 등장하는 등 작가의 팬으로서 즐길거리도 많기에 별점은 3점입니다. 지치고 무료한 일상에 즐거움을 주는, 그야말로 '킬링타임용' 재미에 최적화된 책이 아닐까 싶네요.
